This is more the type of book that I have come to know and love by this author. I'm still a little undecided about how I feel about Angela's character. It has some spicy scenes that make you want more. I have read the authors very yummy Cat star Chronicles books and now I've had the joy of reading some very yummy cowboy books. She draws you in and doesn't fail to give you a great read. I highly recommend reading!

Excerpt from Cowboy Heaven by Cheryl Brooks – Chapter 1
There he was again. That same cowboy I’d seen on the drive into town, still walking, still carrying a big green duffel bag on one shoulder and a saddle slung over the other. He’d been traveling in the opposite direction and hadn’t bothered to look up as I’d passed him earlier. I’d barely glimpsed his face then, but I saw it quite clearly now. A glance over his shoulder revealed his bleak, exhausted expression. He might have been near the point of collapse, but he obviously wasn’t prepared to admit defeat.
Not yet, anyway.
I couldn’t believe no one had picked him up in the three hours since I’d last seen him. He hadn’t looked very fresh even then. I had no idea where he was headed, but in the middle of Wyoming, there wasn’t much within walking distance, no matter where you were going.
He turned toward me, sticking out a halfhearted thumb as I came closer, his face streaked with dirt and sweat and what might have been tears. A black Stetson shadowed his eyes, and his boots and jeans were dusty and worn. His sweat-soaked denim shirt clung to his chest, unbuttoned halfway to his waist, the sleeves ripped out. He probably wasn’t trying to look cool, even though he did. No, he was likely trying to get cool, in any way he possibly could. My truck was air-conditioned and comfortable, and there was plenty of room for him and his meager belongings. I could no more have left him there than I could have ignored a starving child.
As I pulled over to stop, his eyes closed and his lips moved as though uttering a prayer of thanks. His knees buckled slightly, and for a moment, I thought he truly would collapse. Instead, he took a deep breath and stood up straight. Lifting his chin, he aimed luminous blue eyes at me and flashed a dazzling smile. His silver belt buckle suggested this man was no ordinary ranch hand but a down-on-his-luck rodeo cowboy who, unless I missed my guess, was heading for Jackson Hole.
A real heartbreaker of a rodeo cowboy, too. Up close, he was even more handsome than he’d been from a distance. Long and lean with tanned, muscular arms, dimples creased his cheeks and black hair curled enticingly from the open edges of his shirt. Several days’ growth of dark beard surrounded full, sensuous lips, darkening a jaw that my fingertips ached to caress. More ebony curls peeked from beneath his hat, making me long to yank off that Stetson to discover what else it was hiding. Oh yes, there was enough gorgeous cowboy to sway a much stronger woman than I ever claimed to be. Tears stung my eyes as something in his expression reminded me of Cody.
My dear, sweet Cody… He’d been gone for two years now, but I hadn’t forgotten that look, and I doubted I ever would.
Determined to mask my roiling emotions, I searched for something amusing to say as I rolled down my window. “Lost your horse?”
My clever tongue was rewarded with another heart-stopping smile. Cody used to say funny things just to make me giggle—which wasn’t difficult since I tend to find humor in nearly any situation—but brushing up on my own repertoire of one-liners to keep this guy smiling seemed like an excellent idea.
His grin was sheepish as he tipped up the brim of his hat. “He sort of drove off without me.”
“Drove off?” I scoffed. “Somehow I doubt that. Seems like he would’ve needed help.”
My handsome cowboy gave me a grim nod. “Oh, he had help all right. My girlfriend dumped me on the highway and took off with the truck, the trailer, and the horse—all of which were actually hers, by the way. She was kind enough to leave me my saddle and my clothes, although a cell phone would’ve been nice.”
I shook my head. “Nice, yes. Helpful, no. They don’t work very well around here. Which kinda makes me mad—I mean, where would you need a phone more than if you were stranded out in the middle of nowhere?”
He glanced around at the vast expanse of sunbaked rangeland. “Is that the name of this place? Nowhere?”
“Sure is.” I couldn’t help giggling. “Want to get out of nowhere?”
“Yes, please,” he replied. “And as quickly as possible.”
“Throw your stuff in the back and hop in,” I said. “We’ll leave nowhere and go…somewhere.”
He did as I suggested, and suddenly the interior of my truck was filled with the pungent aroma of hot, sweaty, dusty—but cologned—cowboy. He’d most likely showered that morning, but it had been one helluva day. The forecast called for the upper nineties—quite a heat wave even for mid-August—and though the humidity was low, some temperatures are best avoided no matter how dry the air.
“You’re a lifesaver,” he said. “I thought that sun was gonna roast me alive.”
“As hot as it gets in these parts, I never go anywhere without water, enough food for a couple of meals, and an umbrella in case I’m ever forced to hike. Want a sandwich?”
“You bet.”
I tossed a nod over my shoulder. “The cooler’s on the backseat. Help yourself. There’s plenty of water.” Although, at that point, a cold beer probably would have been his first choice.
He pulled out two bottles of water and a sandwich, downing the first bottle in three swallows.
“Better now?”
“Much.”
“Let’s see now…” I said as he unwrapped the sandwich. “A cowboy dumped in the middle of nowhere with a saddle and no horse. There’s got to be a country song in that.”
“If you mean a song about a guy bein’ picked up by a girl in a flatbed Ford, I think the Eagles already did that one.”
“I love that song,” I said wistfully. “Guess I always wanted to be that girl.”
“Well, now you are.” He took a bite of the sandwich, chewing it quickly. “How does it feel?”
“Not much different.” This wasn’t entirely true. I wasn’t in the habit of picking up gorgeous cowboys—and this particular cowboy’s presence had me feeling strangely excited. Oh yes, I was very aware of him, and if my brain hadn’t noticed him, my erogenous zones were there to remind me. “For one thing, this isn’t a flatbed Ford, and I’m not what anyone would call a girl anymore.”
He paused in mid-bite. “Why? Have you had a sex-change operation?”
“Nope,” I replied with another giggle. “You can’t call a forty-two-year-old a girl. Well, maybe you could if you happened to be eighty-two yourself, but I’m pretty sure I outgrew the girl category a long time ago—about the time that song was popular.”
Despite the fact that I never once took my eyes off the road, I was aware of his prolonged scrutiny—an assessing gaze that left delightful tingles in its wake.
“Some things improve with age.” He turned toward the window. “You don’t seem like the type to dump a guy in the middle of nowhere.”
Having heard the catch in his voice, I did my best to keep my tone light. Bursting into tears in front of a perfect stranger probably wasn’t on his bucket list. “True—unless he was really obnoxious.”
This particular cowboy would have to have been homicidal or, at the very least, abusive for me to throw him out. He was the most adorable cowboy I’d ever laid eyes on, including the one I’d married.
“I wasn’t being obnoxious.” He fairly bristled with indignation, which seemed to have won out over heartbreak. “I was asleep. I thought she was stopping for gas when I felt the truck slow down. She asked me to take a look at the tires on the trailer, said she thought one had gone flat. While I was checking the tires, she dumped my saddle and duffel bag on the side of the road and drove off. I found this tucked into the saddle.” Reaching into his shirt pocket, he handed me a torn, sweat-soaked scrap of paper.
It’s not working out. Sorry.
“Ouch,” I said with a sympathetic wince. “That’s pretty hard.”
“Yeah.” With an absent nod, he stuffed the note back into his pocket. “I don’t even know what I did wrong. Don’t guess I ever will.”
He seemed nice enough, and he certainly wasn’t ugly. Maybe his girl had breakup issues. As irresistible as he was, I couldn’t imagine breaking his heart while gazing into those eyes of his, and I didn’t even know his name.
She’d probably gone about it the best way possible—a quick, clean break before losing her nerve completely. One glance, one smile, and she’d have forgotten why their relationship wasn’t working. I wasn’t looking forward to dropping him off at the crossroad to the ranch, myself. I had a sudden, overwhelming urge to take him home and wash him, feed him, and tuck him into bed—my bed, to be precise.
I had my doubts about that part. He couldn’t have been more than thirty, and young men generally didn’t seek solace from older women—not that kind of solace, anyway. Consoling him seemed impossible, so I changed the subject.
“Where were you headed?”
“The rodeo in Jackson Hole,” he replied. “I’m a rodeo cowboy.”
“No shit,” I drawled. “I’d never have guessed that. I don’t suppose your girl left you with any money, did she? I mean, I’m not going to charge you for the ride or the lunch, but I’m not going all the way to Jackson Hole, either.”
“I didn’t figure you were.” His downcast expression suggested his hope that he’d been wrong about that. “But at the time, I didn’t really care.”
“Neither did I. I wouldn’t have left you there no matter where you were going. It was…well, let’s just say it was something I couldn’t bring myself to do.”
“Pick up lots of strays, do you?” Turning sideways, he leaned back against the door, a move that not only drew my eye, but also gave me a full-frontal view that made my breath catch in my throat. Oh yes, I’d taken in lots of strays, but none that were anywhere near as attractive.
I shook my head. “Actually picking them up usually isn’t necessary. They all seem to know where I live.”
“If you don’t mind my asking, where do you live? I mean, are we close?”
Obviously, he hoped I lived somewhere near Jackson Hole. I hated to disappoint him. “It’s about another twenty miles—most of which are not on the main highway. I’ll let you out at the turnoff, if that’s okay with you.”
His face fell, but he nodded, apparently resigned to the fact that this ride wasn’t going to be more than a brief respite. “Not much choice, is there?” He gave a fatalistic shrug. “I don’t have enough money on me to pay you to take me to Jackson Hole. I really should pay you for what you’ve already done.”
I caught myself wishing that he did have enough money—or that he would ask me to run off with him and follow the rodeo circuit, never going home at all. I would have loved to throw caution to the wind and do just that, but I had too many responsibilities. Not only did I have a ranch to run, but I also had my father and my kids to look after.
No, scratch that. Chris and Will were both in college. I had a hard time remembering that except when confronted with the sight of their empty rooms as I passed by them every day. Out on the highway I could pretend they were both there at home waiting for me—and Cody, too.
No, regardless of how much money this man might offer to pay me, I couldn’t shirk my duties and simply up and disappear. Nor would I accept his money. He obviously needed to hold on to what little he had stashed in those jeans.
“I couldn’t possibly take money from you,” I protested. “I wouldn’t be much of a Good Samaritan if I did, would I?”
“I suppose not.”
He shrugged again and we drove on in silence. Remaining slouched against the door, he draped his left arm across the headrest and bent up one knee, stretching his legs apart enough that my eyes were continually landing on that section of blue jeans due south of that big, silver belt buckle. From time to time he shifted his hips as though my glances made him uncomfortable, and while I did try to keep my eyes on the road, every once in a while they would stray back to him—and that enticing bulge in his jeans…
“What would it take to get you to drive me all the way to Jackson Hole?” The hint of suggestion in his voice startled me almost as much as the abrupt nature of his query.
Suddenly, my mouth was as dry as a gulch. Reaching for my bottle of water, I took a sip and stole another peek at him. Those luminous eyes peered at me from beneath lids that were heavy with sensuous intent.
His lips curled into a provocative smile. “I’d be willing to bet there’s something I could do for you that would pay you back—or at least make it worth your while.”

I really enjoyed this book. It's different then books I am used to reading from this author though. I have read books in her Cat Star Chronicles and I do have to say those books were definitely hotter but this one was still really good in my opinion. I don't like the 'cheating' aspect but I do think that Lauren and Steve make a great couple. With this being a Novella it is short so everything from meeting, falling for each other and all that that entails has to happen pretty quick. So there is not as much character development as there would be in a novel so you have to expect that when you read a novella. With everything said and done with all that I do and don't like about it I will say again that I thought it was a great book. I definitely recommend reading.

Jane is easily forgotten among the Ton. She is considered a Bluestocking and a Wallflower. Not by choice either. That's just how it is. With the exception of her brother the only people who even know who Jane is or when she's around is her friend Grace and her Earl. She wants love and passion it's just that no one ever notices her long enough for it to be an option. She finally makes a decision. If she can't have love she will experience passion, at least once in her life. And she can only picture experiencing it with one person. Captain Xavier Grey. Now she just needs to convince him.

Xavier does not feel that he should be in polite society. He did things in the war that he is not proud of. He decides to seclude himself at his country estate. That doesn't seem to stop Jane though. He decides to give his staff some time off and the next thing he knows the little Bluestocking is knocking on his door. When he finds out what she is up to there is no where he can go as they are snowed in. Now he has to try to resist her because her offer is way too tempting.

When it comes to historical romance authors Erica Ridley is quickly becoming one of my favorites. every book I have read in this series so far is great. I can't pick a favorite. I could not put this book down. Right from the beginning she draws you in and keeps your attention until the end. In all honesty I didn't want it to end. I think Jane has been one of my favorite characters since 'The Earls Defiant Wallflower'. It is part of a series but it could be read as a stand alone. I would highly recommend reading the series from the beginning though as Jane and Xavier are introduced in book 1. If you are a fan of historical romance or romance in general I highly recommend reading!

When bluestocking Jane Downing confesses she’s only ever been asked to dance twice—and one of those times was with her own brother—Captain Xavier Grey pulls her into his embrace for an impromptu waltz, right in the middle of his snowbound cottage...

The muscles beneath his coat tightened as he led her in smooth, graceful circles. Jane didn’t need music to feel like she was floating. The soft firelight made the room all the more romantic. She could almost believe herself the belle of a ball.

Except, fairy tales didn’t happen to her. Her fingers grew cold. Xavier was right. Love affairs—even stolen kisses—weren’t as carefree as she’d believed. Once the snow was gone, he would forget her just like everyone else did. And this time, it would break her heart.

“Jane. Look at me.” He slipped a knuckle beneath her chin and raised her gaze to his. “I notice you. I see you. I have you in my arms.”

Her lips parted and her eyes stung. Until he’d spoken the words, she hadn’t realized that she’d been waiting for them her entire life.
With nothing more than a soft murmur, he’d carved open her soul and left a part of himself inside.

She would never be the same. Her heart clattered at an alarming rate, but she could not look away. Nor did she wish to.

His gorgeous blue eyes shone from beneath inky lashes. The intensity of his gaze was thrilling and frightening and filled her with wonder. He saw her. Plump, boring Jane. And yet he still wanted her in his arms.

When they completed their circuit about the room, he paused before the fireplace—but did not immediately release her.

She hoped he never would. The evening had been magical. He was magical. She would be happy to stay right here, wrapped in his arms, forever. But all she had was this moment.

He lowered his head to hers. His lips grazed her cheekbone, her earlobe, the pulse point just beneath the line of her jaw. Her heart fluttered. Was he finally giving in to their chemistry? Or was he acting out of pity?

She angled her head, seeking his mouth. She wanted to feel his lips against hers. To have him and taste him, and to know that this time, he wasn’t kissing her because she was bothersome. He’d be kissing her because he wanted her. Because he saw her. Because he liked her.

When his mouth caught hers, gooseflesh rippled along her skin, followed by an infusion of molten desire. She felt like she’d waited for this moment her entire life.

She slid her hands up his strong arms to his neck, where overlong black hair curled against the stark white of his cravat. He might not wish to be a hero, but he certainly looked the part. Even without his smart red regimentals, he was every inch the storybook prince. Tall and dashing, with black hair and startlingly blue eyes.

More than that, however, was who he was on the inside. He noticed her. He saw that she wished to be seen. He made her believe that forever was something she actually deserved. She melted against him. He wouldn’t kiss her unless he felt it, too. Unless he meant it, at least for this moment. No one else looked outside of themselves long enough to wonder what torture others might be going through. No one else reached deep into the furthest crevices of her heart and dared to ask, why not love? Why not her, too?

His lips were firm and teasing. The dance of his tongue against hers, exhilarating. Her heart swelled. When she’d set out on this journey, she’d assumed the lustful nature of men would make it impossible to

decline the charms of a willing female. She’d been wrong.

Xavier was every bit as passionate as she might have hoped, but a thousand times more discriminating. He wasn’t holding her simply because she was there. He was holding her because he wished to. Because they both wished to. And oh, did she love his kisses.

Breathless, she arched into his touch—

And screamed as claws raked down her spine.

Xavier sprang backward, panting, his eyes wide with surprise. “Did I hurt you?”

“It’s not you,” she gritted out, wincing at the weight of the cat tangled in her hair and cleaving to her skin. Gingerly, she turned her back toward the firelight.

“God’s teeth. Is that…”

“Yes,” she managed through pain-clenched teeth. “Please remove him from me as quickly and carefully as possible.”

Xavier leapt forward.

Jane closed her eyes and concentrated on breathing. The moment the devil cat was disengaged from her spine, she intended to trap the little demon in his wicker cage for the rest of the night. Or the rest of his life.

Taken by a Dragon (Eternal Mates Romance Series Book 7)
Felicity Heaton
Possessed by a need to save a beautiful Amazon warrior from the vision he witnessed, Loke snatched her from the midst of the battle between the Third and Fifth realm of the demons, and carried her to his home deep in the black mountains of Hell to protect her. But as the fierce little female awakens, he finds she’s anything but grateful, and his dragon instincts roar to life to warn she might be more to him than an enemy—she might be his fated female.

Anais remembers meeting a handsome warrior in the heat of battle, a man who was her enemy but who looked at her with eyes that held dark heat and wicked promises. When she wakes to find that same dragon shifter has taken her captive, desire is the last thing on her mind, but escaping him to return to Archangel, the hunter organisation she works for, sounds less than appealing when he reveals the reason he took her—to stop her from dying.

Can Loke protect Anais from the dangers of his realm and how far will he go to save her from the future he keeps witnessing? Can Anais resist the fierce attraction that burns between them as hot as fire and stay true to Archangel or will her heart be taken by the dragon?

Loke has never met a Mortal before. He can not go to the Mortal Realm. No Dragon can or they will die. Therefore he knows nothing of Mortal ways. No matter how much she may not like it or try to fight. He is shocked when he discovers that she is his one fated mate. He then vows he will do everything that he can to make her want to stay with him.

As with every other book in this series I absolutely LOVED it!  This is book 7 in a series but it can be read as a stand alone. There are other characters from other books in the series but it does not throw you off it just makes you want to read the other books to find out their stories.  There are many openings for more books in this series. This gives me hope that there will be more. This book brings you a loveable if a bit naĂŻve Dragon a female with a lot of determination even if she is a bit too trusting, Love, Betrayal, a pretty intense fight scene and Lots of pretty Yummy Loving. I can't wait to see what the author comes up with next! I definitely recommend reading!

Taken by a Dragon – Excerpt

Anais had the feeling she had made a grave mistake by disobeying Loke and she was going to pay for it.

The men halted, jerking her to a stop with them, and she looked ahead of her, towards a larger round building that stood on a high solid black stone platform at the other end of an open square.

A golden-haired male lounged on an obsidian throne in front of the thatched hut, cragged mountains his grim backdrop. His large hands rested over the ornate ends of the arms of the throne and his deep bronze leathers

stretched tight over long powerful legs that were spread, giving him a relaxed and easy-going appearance that his sharp golden gaze contradicted.

This man knew everything that was happening around him without even needing to look to confirm it.

Was he the dragon equivalent of a king?

The woman approached him and he eyed her, a bored edge to his gaze as they spoke. She fawned over him but the male didn’t seem impressed with her, not even when she pointed to Anais. His expression only darkened further then, his lips compressing into a thin line of displeasure. What was the woman telling him?

Anais looked at the green-haired and silver-haired men that held her, their strong hands clamped tightly around her upper arms and their faces impassive. Others had gathered around the square too, standing in front of the huts that lined the edges of it, a mixture of men and women.

She gasped when the men holding her began walking with her again, jerking her away from her study of the village and the other dragon shifters. Her eyes leaped to the blond male on the throne ahead of her. The redhead moved to one side, her head bowed as she backed away from the male.

Anais guessed this was Loke’s clan’s village and this man was the chief.
He looked no older than Loke, but that didn’t mean he was the same age. She had to assume he was older and more powerful than Loke, and not nearly as nice. If she did that, she might just survive whatever was about to happen.

The two men released her and backed away too, leaving her standing a short distance from the chief in the middle of the circle. She could feel everyone staring at her and it was hard to fight her nerves and not let them get the better of her. She had faced a lot of powerful enemies in her life as a hunter, but never without a weapon and never in such numbers.

“Where do you hail from?” the man said, his voice silken and smooth, and his English perfect.

Loke could take a few lessons from him. He spoke it as if it was his native tongue, not a second language. Loke still stumbled from time to time. She looked back in the direction they had come, heart sore with a need to see him flying over the mountain range.

Coming for her.

She hated relying on anyone, never wanted to be coddled or have another person fight her battles, but she was also a realist. She wasn’t so stubborn that she couldn’t recognise when she was in trouble and needed help.
She needed it pretty badly right now.

“I asked you a question.”

Anais turned back to face the chief, because not answering him sounded as if it might not end well for her.

“From the mortal realm.”

A murmur ran through the crowd around her but she didn’t take her eyes off the golden-haired male on the throne. His only reaction was a shift in position. He propped his left ankle on his right knee but kept his hands dangling off the ends of the arms of the throne. His fingers began a slow drumming against the carved black stone as he studied her.

Casual, yet deadly.

She could almost sense it radiating from him. He was dangerous. More powerful than Loke. She got the impression that being the chief of the clan wasn’t a role you were born or voted into. She had the feeling that it was a position you won through brute force, determination, and possibly bloodthirstiness.
“A mortal… and how did Loke come across a mortal… may I ask?” He ran golden eyes over her and she felt other men do the same.

Her skin crawled in response and she wanted to rub her hands over herself to wipe away that disgusting sensation, but didn’t want to draw their attention to her even more by openly touching herself in front of them.

“He took me from the fight in the Third Realm.” She had figured that honesty would be the best policy to adopt, but the way the chief’s eyes darkened dangerously warned her that it might have been the worst.

She had the feeling she had just got Loke into a lot of trouble, and possibly herself too.

“You are a prisoner of war and Loke should have notified me, as the others did.”

Anais stared at him as those four words ran around her head.

As. The. Others. Did.

Her stomach dropped into her bare feet.

“Others?” she whispered and started to shake her head as that tried to sink in. Other dragons had taken huntresses from the battlefield. They had taken her kin.

The man smiled cruelly. “Our males always have need of spoils of war.”

Anger curled through her veins, obliterating her fear, and she clenched her fists and took a step towards the man before she could stop herself. “Spoils of war? Those are my friends… I want to know where they are.”

His smile only widened and he pointed beyond her. “I believe Zephyr has one… do you not? You could attempt to take her back from him.”

Anais whirled on the spot to face the green-haired male who had marched her to the village. He folded thick arms across his bare chest, causing every muscle to tense, and she swallowed hard.

“Perhaps Zephyr would like a companion for his female?”

The bastard named Zephyr smiled at that suggestion and ran forest-green eyes over her, lingering on her breasts.

“The female has grown tiresome. She constantly cries and whimpers like a mewling bitch. A new female might suit me.” He took a step towards her. “You have fire. I should have taken you. Perhaps I shall.”
“You bloody bastard,” Anais growled, scooped up a small pebble from the black ground and hurled it at him with every drop of her strength. It beaned him in the eye and he snarled at her, flashing sharp teeth. Her heart leaped into her chest as he took a step towards her, menace and dark intent rolling off him.

“Enough.” The chief’s voice rang out and Zephyr stopped and backed off, settling for glaring at her even though she could see he wanted to get his own back and teach her a lesson she would probably never forget.

She slowly turned back to face the chief.

Her courage failed, immediately disappearing when he rose onto his feet and came to stand at the edge of the stone platform. He glared down at her, his golden eyes bright with fire that warned her to keep her temper in check. She was no match for him, or for the one called Zephyr, or any of the men present. She wasn’t even sure that she would be a match for any of the women, not without a weapon.

All she could do was bide her time and hope that Loke would come for her. She wasn’t sure that he would. She had broken her promise. She hadn’t just broken it, she had shattered it into a million pieces. She didn’t deserve to be rescued, but she held on to the hope that he would give chase and save her.

She hadn’t been a damsel in distress on the battlefield, but she was one now.
It was ironic that she didn’t want a prince to save her from a dragon.

She wanted a dragon to save her from Hell’s equivalent of a prince.

A chief who looked as if he was considering killing her or handing her over to Zephyr.

Loke had been right.

He’d had a vision. He had seen something terrible happen to her. He had asked her not to go to the cave mouth and had confessed he hadn’t wanted the other dragons to see her.

What if she had just made that vision come true?

Was she about to die here?

No.
Her nightmare wasn’t going to end here. She knew it. If Loke didn’t come for her, she would end up in the hands of one of the male dragons surrounding her, and she was one hundred percent certain that whichever dragon took her, he wouldn’t be taking care of her wounds, cooking for her, and protecting her out of the kindness of his heart.

He wouldn’t vow not to hurt her.

He would view her as a spoil of war, a way of satisfying whatever dark urges gripped him, and she would have no way of stopping him.

“What did Loke want with you?” the chief said and she stared up at him, her hands shaking at her sides and her knees on the verge of buckling as the gravity of her situation pressed down on her.

It took her a moment to understand what he was asking and when she did, she knew that the chief was somehow aware that Loke hadn’t taken her as a spoil of war.

“He didn’t take me prisoner,” she whispered, finding it impossible to speak any louder or with confidence. All of her strength was draining from her and nothing she did stopped it from flowing out of her, leaving her weak and trembling.

Zephyr’s words haunted her, tearing at that strength, ripping it away from her piece by piece. Whoever he had taken from the war, he had broken her. She rubbed her arms, trying to get the chill off them as fear crawled through her. He would break her in the same way.

Loke.

Her heart called for him, ached with a need to see his face, to look into his clear aquamarine eyes and hear his voice telling her that everything was going to be all right. No dragon would lay a hand on her. No dragon would hurt her.

She pressed her hands to her chest and the chief frowned at them, his eyes narrowing in a way she didn’t like. He looked as if he could see straight through her. He knew her inner fears and her thoughts. He knew her heart called for one of his dragons.

“Why did Loke take you?” he said, a commanding edge to his deep voice, one that warned her again not to disobey him or displease him.

Anais looked him right in the eye and opened her mouth to tell him. Her words died on her lips as his eyes left her, lifting towards the dark sky beyond her.

His golden gaze shimmered with fire and narrowed, focusing on something. She looked back towards the mountains but no dragon broke the bleak sky. What was he looking at? She turned back to face him and a quiet murmur ran through the people gathered around them.

“Save your answer.” The blond man didn’t take his eyes off the horizon as he addressed her. “I shall ask the dragon warrior himself.”

His eyes fell to her, intense and fierce, piercing her and leaving her feeling that he knew something she didn’t. He stared at her for long seconds before raising his hand.

“Shackle her. Let us see what Loke thinks of that.”

Zephyr grabbed her arm and began pulling her towards the edge of the square just as a distant roar shattered the silence. She whipped around to face the mountains and her heart leaped as she saw the majestic blue dragon zooming towards the village.

Loke.

She fought Zephyr and managed to break his hold, but didn’t make it two steps towards the landing strip before one of his hands clamped down on the nape of her neck and the other struck her across the back of her head. Her
ears rang and her vision wobbled, and the grim colours of Hell whirled together into a single swathe of black as darkness claimed her.
